Table Tennis Club

Dr. Daniel Amen, reknown psychiatrist and brain imaging expert has said, “Table tennis is the number one brain sport” as it works five areas of the brain simultaneously such as movement, balance, hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and strategy while increasing blood flow to the brain.

Mrs Shaffie’s vision of a table tennis club for A.S.J.A. Girls’ College came to realization when, in September 2013, with the assistance of Ms Karim, the club was started. Disadvantaged by the lack of a Physical Education class, both teachers set out to ensure students were afforded the opportunity of physical activity at school.

Apart from learning and having fun in the sport, the club seeks to foster discipline and all round development by encouraging students to work hard, comprehend success and failure, handle conflict by thinking critically and understand their role as individuals in a team.

The club started with one board, four paddles and ten eager students. Mrs Shaffie and Ms Karim “coached” the girls, until International Table Tennis Federation certified coach and umpire Yasin Siddiq Ramsingh joined the club in September 2014. The club is registered with the Caroni Zone of the Trinidad and Tobago Table Tennis Association.

On December 11th 2015, the club participated in their first tournament, The Low Cost Caroni Zone Tournament, placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the Girls under 13 novice category and 2nd and 3rd in the Girls under 15 beginner category.

The club continues to grow with the addition of four boards from the Ministry of Education. Club teachers and students continue to train with Mr Ramsingh. Senior students of the club also assist in coaching new members. Mrs. Shaffie co-manages the club along with Mrs. Hoosaney.
